City council backs jeep drivers’ plea for release of fuel subsidy
by Rimaliza A. Opiña

The Baguio city council has passed a resolution asking the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to fast track the release of fuel vouchers for public utility drivers in the city.

In the National Capital Region, the Landbank of the Philippines started issuing fuel vouchers to drivers and operators last July 12. The city council said the needs of PUJ drivers in the city or the region are the same as those in the NCR, hence, fuel vouchers should be issued simultaneous in other parts of the country.

“Kailangan nang i-fast track. Pareho lang naman ang pangangailangan ng mga driver dito sa ating siyudad,” the resolution’s proponent, Vice Mayor Edison Bilog said.

To cushion the impact of the rise in fuel prices due to the implementation of the Train Law, the government,  through its Pantawid Pasada program has allotted P977 million as subsidy for drivers.

Each driver will be issued debit cards containing P833.33 every month or P5,000 for six months, which they may use when refueling with partner gasoline stations like Shell, Petron, and Phoenix.

In the Cordillera, 4,932 names of legitimate franchise holders have been submitted to the LTFRB central office.

Lawyer Jess Balagot, officer-in-charge transportation development officer, said the LTFRB has yet to issue guidelines on how and when drivers in the Cordillera can avail of the subsidy.
