Law students of Saint Louis University broke their routine of preparing position papers or do advance reading in preparation for their class.

On March 13, Law students reached out to residents of the Consuelo Homes for Children.

Twenty residents and one Independent Living Program child under the care of the Consuelo Homes benefitted from the outreach program, which was highlighted by parlor games and gift-giving.

The group gave stuffed toys, blankets, and school supplies to the kids. The gifts were donated by various sponsors to the Chief Justice Moran Community Legal Assistance Office (CLAO), the legal aid clinic of SLU School of Law.

Part of CLAOs’ programs is the integration of law students to missions and outreach activities.

Charlie Pingaoan, a third year Law student, said he learned a lot from the activity for it is his first time to visit a home for abandoned, neglected, or abused children.

“As a Law student, I realized that studying Law should not be confined to reading books, memorizing, and writing. It must be pursued with a deeper purpose, considering that the law is for the protection of the oppressed and promotion of human rights. I realized that becoming a lawyer is not for the title, prestige, or money for what I can do to help kids, such as those in the Consuelo Homes,” he said.
