Suspect in pawnshop robbery denies ‘arrest’ made by police
by Ofelia C. Empian

Forty-nine year old John Baguiwet Dugao Jr., one of the 10 suspects in the pawnshop heist in Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur last Nov. 2016, clarified an earlier news report published in this paper regarding his arrest along Legarda Road  in Baguio on Aug. 24.

The source of the news item is the Baguio City Police Office.

Dugao said he was not arrested by any police personnel particularly from BCPO. He clarified that upon learning that he was identified as one of the suspects through an online news article, he voluntarily went to Ilocos Sur to see his warrant of arrest at the sala of Judge Richard Domingo of the Municipal Trial Court for Sta. Cruz-Sta Lucia, Ilocos Sur.

He then posted bail for his temporary liberty amounting to P24,000 in June 5 this year and not August as what the police report has stated.

The earlier news report was based on the police report submitted by the BCPO to the Police Regional Office-Cordillera dated Aug. 24.

Dugao maintained his innocence saying he was merely implicated in the crime.

To prove his innocence, he said they are attending a series of court hearings in Ilocos Sur regarding the matter. He asked the community to reserve their judgment until the trial is over since they are still suspects.

The report of BCPO also include the serving of the warrants of arrest of two other suspects in the locality namely Gerald Baydo alias Todyog, 32 resident of Middle Quirino Hill and Kimbo Sagalto, 28 resident of Sitio Stonehill, Balili, La Trinidad. The duo also posted bail for their temporary liberty.

The three suspects along with seven others are facing a case of robbery.

In Nov. 2016, a group of robbers, suspected as the Acetylene Gang took away P1.5 million worth of assorted jewelries and cash inside HL Henry Lhuillier Pawnshop in Sta. Cruz, Ilocos Sur by entering through a drainage canal near the pawnshop and using acetylene torch to break into the vault, characteristic of the Acetylene Gang’s style of robbery according to police.
