Consumer rights IEC goes to barangays
by Christian Tubadeza

BANGUED, Abra – The Department of Trade and Industry-Abra has brought its information dissemination campaign to the barangays to strengthen public awareness on their rights, interests, and responsibilities as consumers.

The activity is part of the celebration of Consumer Welfare Month with the theme “Sustainable consumption: Understanding the impact of consumer’s choices in shared environment.”

In “Negosyo sa Barangay information campaign in Barangay Villa Mercedes in San Quintin, Franco Ching from the Consumer Protection Division (CPD) of DTI-Abra outlined the need to focus attention on the role that consumers play in the development of the economy.

“Consumers must understand their rights to basic needs, safety, information, and consumer education as well as their responsibilities, critical awareness, and environmental awareness,” he said.

Ching explained the functions of the CPD in protecting the consumers’ rights and interest, such as price regulation and inspection of basic and prime commodities, checking of grocery stores’ compliance to proper price tagging and product standards, and implementation of fair trade laws.

He gave tips to guide residents when buying commodities such as choice of brand, product quality, and product standard marks or logos.
