Greenhouse technology seen to improve quality of local potato
by Elvy S. Tacquio

Potato farmers in Mankayan, Benguet are now assured of a stable and accessible source of quality planting materials for a bountiful harvest.

Through the assistance of the Department of Agriculture’s Philippine Rural Development Project, the Mankayan Young Farmers Organization (MYFO) will soon be producing potato planting materials.

Using greenhouse technology, MYFO has established a protected cultivation area that is able to meet the demands of producing high quality potato produce, restore the quality of marketable tubers, and to provide affordable price of planting materials for farmers.

Members of MYFO have long been engaged in vegetable production but this time, they opted to install greenhouses that will address the need for a steady source of potato planting materials which will benefit not only the members of the organization but other farmers in the community, said MYFO president Jovito Banglod.

Organized in November 2012, MYFO is composed of more than 40 members who were former agriculture trainees in Japan.

The organization aims to increase agricultural livelihood that promotes easy and affordable farming system that can produce competent marketable products.

The organization also received seedling trays, water tank, and power knapsack sprayer.

Banglod said the greenhouses were completed in September 2018.

Initially, the organization planted bell pepper and chinese cabbage since the potato mother plant have not been delivered yet.

In the meantime, the organization will be producing other crops while waiting for the potato mother plants.

The subproject costs P1 million shared by the World Bank, the DA, and the provincial government of Benguet.

The organization provided a counterpart of more than 20 percent in the form of production labor and other materials.
