Farmers urged to sell palay to NFA
by Ma Teresa B. Beñas / PIA

BANGUED, Abra – Farmers here were encouraged to sell their palay to the National Food Authority to help ensure sufficient stocks during the lean months and in times of calamities.

NFA Abra branch manager Elizabeth Kai said NFA is buying palay at P20.30 per kilo from individual farmers and P20.70 per kilo from cooperatives and registered associations.

Kai assured there is sufficient rice supply in the province at present.

“At the moment, we have 1,500 sacks of NFA rice stocked in our bodega located at Barangay Calaba, Bangued and an additional truckload of rice is about to arrive from La Union,” Kai said.

NFA rice is being sold in public markets at P27 per kilo.

The NFA rice sold in the market is imported from Vietnam and Thailand.

Rice retailers in the public markets are now being given a weekly allocation of 10 cavans while those selling outside the public markets are given five cavans each per week, she said.

In November last year, the NFA central office assured that NFA rice supply has gone back to normal after hundreds of cavans of imported rice arrived in the country following reports of lean supply the previous months last year.
