TESDA–CAR hosts pre–selection of resto, cooking skills champs
by Carlito C. Dar and R. Quindara

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority is gearing up for the ASEAN Skills and WorldSkills competitions through the pre-qualification selection process that will determine the country’s competitors and experts who will join the WorldSkills Philippines Training Camp 2018.

Tesda-Cordillera Director Efren Piñol led the mock competition for Restaurant Services and Cooking trades at the Baguio City School of Arts and Trades, a Tesda institution awarded as a Center of Excellence in Restaurant and Tourism services.

Piñol welcomed the competitors and experts from regions III, IV-A, IX, XI, and the Cordillera, which will be competing in the two areas.

The Cordillera is represented by Jevo Gygni Calaustro with expert Mary Kristine Iris Pasion for cooking and Julie Anne Buaken with expert Joseph Sab-it for restaurant services. All of them are from BCSAT.

Tesda National Technical Committee member for Mindanao Adrian Ampong said sending contestants to international competitions aims to build up the capabilities of Filipino technical-vocational students and Tesda experts.

He said the regional representatives at the national selection are already winners and the best in their respective regions, but Tesda will be selecting those who will represent the country for the ASEAN skills competition set in Thailand in September.

The week-long selection process at BCSAT is the third of six scheduled competitions since April 23. The Tesda Regional Training Center in Tacloban hosted the Automobile Technology area, and Korea Philippines Vocational Training Center-Davao hosted the Mechatronics, Hairdressing, and Beauty Therapy skills area.

Those selected will undergo Gold Camp 1.0 and 2.0 in which the psychological, emotional, and physical component of the technical experts and competitors will be evaluated.

Those who will demonstrate the highest level of technical and behavioral competence will represent the country in the ASEAN Skills and WorldSkills competitions.
