BFAR disperses fingerlings in 7 towns of Mountain Province
by Andrew B. Doga–ong / PIA

BONTOC, Mountain Province – The Provincial Fishery Office distributed 87,000 fingerlings to fish farmers in the province to enhance their fish culture production.

The fingerlings dispersal is under the Technology Demonstration Project of BFAR and is aimed at providing additional livelihood to residents while partly addressing food sufficiency, particularly the fish supply of the province.

Beneficiaries of the fingerlings are BFAR-registered fish farmers in Sagada, Besao, Bontoc, Sadanga, Tadian, Natonin, and Paracelis.

Dispersed fingerlings consisted of 43,000 tilapia, 40,000 catfish, and 4,000 carp.

Aside from the fingerlings, Provincial Fishery Officer Martha Estima said the farmers were also provided with pry and starter feeds. They will be later on given grower and finisher feeds to sustain their fish raising projects.

Estima said the farmers will adopt the various fish raising technologies found suitable and viable in their respective localities such as integrated farming, poly-culture, pan culture and fish cage/pen.

Agriculture officials have been encouraging residents to venture in fish farming as this will not only provide an alternative source of livelihood, create jobs but also boost the protein-rich food supply for the province. Fish supply for the province usually comes from regions 1 and 2.

Estima advised farmers interested in fish production to establish fish ponds and have it registered with BFAR to avail of assistance from the government.
