The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority recently announced the first accredited farm schools in Benguet.

Outgoing Tesda-Cordillera Director Francisco Jucar said the farm schoo, primarily aims to train and encourage the younger generation to pursue farming.

He said this will be a way to uplift the lives of farmers and their children through the various trainings to be conducted on farm productivity and producing healthy foods by reducing dependents on chemicals.

The target beneficiaries are farmers and fisher folks and their relatives up to the fourth level of consanguinity and members of the community where the farm school is located.

The accredited farm schools in Benguet are Lily of the Valley at Puguis, Cosmic Farms at Beckel, and Master’s Garden at Lamtang all in La Trinidad.

Tesda Baguio-Benguet Director Angela Gabriel said the three accredited farm schools has been acting as a farm training schools previously in partnership with the Agricultural Training Institute-Cordillera.

Gabriel said there are 50 participants that will go through the farm schooling program in each of the three farms. She said Lily of the Valley Organic Farms already has 50 participants that have started their training last week.

Registration and screening of participants is ongoing at the Cosmic Farms and Master’s Garden.

Gabriel said Tesda will be providing scholarship for the 150 participants of the Farmer Schools Program with a total cost of P11,000 per person that will cover the training cost, entrepreneurship fee, and assessment fee.

The participants will complete their their schooling in 29 days.

Master’s Garden will be offering Practical Organic Gardening NCII. Cosmic Farms and Lily of the Valley will be offering Organic Production NCII.

The program is in coordination with the Department of Agriculture-Agriculture Training Institute and the Department of Tourism.

Rogel Marsan, proprietor of Cosmic Farms said in screening the participants, he said they would chose those who would use the skills they’ve learned to employ in their own farms or to teach others to do the same.

“We have to screen the participants who would really use the information in their own farms or to teach others how to farm,” Marsan said.
