LT bizmen advised to strengthen linkage
by Ofelia C. Empian

Strengthening one’s network and cooperation is needed to grow in business.

Farmer-entrepreneur Rogel Marzan gave the advice to a group of local businessmen during the 2nd Entrepreneurs Summit in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Marzan, owner of the agri-eco tourism farm Cosmic Farms, shared his experiences to the audience composed mostly of micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs in the town during the one-day affair.

“You have to maximize your networks; in fact all of us here should know each other after this activity,” he said.

The farmer-entrepreneur shared tips on how he was able to expand his farm from simply using it for crop production into venturing to farm tourism, skills training center, and even venturing to consultancy service.

He said it is not enough to work hard in building one’s farm or business. He encouraged farmers and entrepreneurs to continue enhancing their skills and knowledge in order to properly apply it in their own farms.

He said it is also important to seek trainings and learn from other businessmen who made it in their respective fields.

When he was starting his business, specifically venturing in organic production in the early 2000’s, Marzan sought help from Patricio Acosta, one of the pioneers in organic production in Benguet.

He said he took advantage of opportunities to continue learning and apply these in his own farm.

“It is important that you make your presence felt in the community and in the local government unit. Agpaam-amo kayo gamin,” he said.

He also challenged the businessmen to give back through their community service programs to help others grow as well.

Marzan is the 2016 Regional Gawad Saka Outstanding Organic Agriculture Farmer, 2016 regional winner for Outstanding Farming Family Award, and 2015 national awardee-Outstanding Individual Farmer.

Recently, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority-Benguet accredited Cosmic Farms as farm school in Beckel, Lily of the Valley farms at Puguis, and Master’s Garden at Lamtang, all in La Trinidad.

Through a scholarships, Tesda supported 50 participants for each of the three  farms to learn about farming.

The program entails 29 days of schooling. It is implemented in coordination with the Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Training Institute and the Department of Tourism.
