Ifugao irrigators’ group is CAR’s best
by Marcelo B. Lihgawon / PIA

LAMUT, Ifugao – The Gunglo ti Mannalon Irrigators’ Association (GMIA) in Barangay Lawig was declared the 2012 most outstanding association in Cordillera.

The GMIA was cited for its exemplary performance in the operation and maintenance of the Hapid National Irrigation System.

National Irrigation Authority-Ifugao said the involvement of every member helped the association become successful.

“From the pre-construction stage, which included project investigation, planning, and survey, farmer-beneficiaries were involved and during the construction, manpower was composed of GMIA members,” NIA reported.

GMIA was formerly called the Lawig Irrigators Association, which was formed in 1978 to maintain the then Lawig Communal Irrigation System, now integrated to the Hapid National Irrigation System.

Under regular assistance and support through training and workshops conducted by NIA-Ifugao, officers were trained and organized and doubled its amortization per hectare that half of the payment of the individual farmers went to the association’s fund.

Since its integration with the NIS, GMIA was regularly receiving irrigation assistance incentive from Irrigation Service Fee collection since they were able to deliver an average of 65 percent collection efficiency and had been satisfactorily doing their regular canal maintenance works under the Irrigation Management Transfer-Model 1 contract.
