Livestock production high in first quarter of 2016
by Ofelia C. Empian

The high demand for livestock noted in the first quarter of 2016 compared to 2015 is attributed to the election-related activities, according to the Philippines Statistics Authority-Cordillera.

In PSA’s agricultural statistics for January to June 2016, the livestock production posted an increase of 4.5 percent with 16,536 livestocks noted for 2016 compared to the 15,822 in 2015.

The region’s total carabao production was 1,418 metric tons, up by about one percent over last 2015’s level of 1,404 MT. Highest production was reported in Apayao with a share of 27.3 percent followed by Abra at 24.8 percent.

Cattle production in the region, estimated at 2,023 MT, was 2.7 percent higher than 2015’s output of 1,969 MT. Abra had the biggest share in total production at 35.5 percent.

Also, hog production displayed a positive trend as it posted a 5.2 percent increase for the first half of 2016. Production went up from 12,041 MT in 2015 to 12,667 MT in 2016. Kalinga and Abra were the major producers of hog in the region contributing 24.4 and 22.3 percent to the total hog production, respectively.

Goat production in the Cordillera was 429 MT for the first semester of 2016. It recorded an increase of 5.1 percent compared to the 2015 output of 408 MT. Abra was the major producer of goat during the period with 60.6 percent contribution.

For the first semester of 2016, hog production contributed more than three-fourths of the total livestock production with 76.6 percent. Cattle, carabao and goat productions shared about one-fourth of the total output at 12.2, 8.6 and 2.6 percent, respectively.

On the other hand, the poultry sector declined by 3.3 percent in production or 6,021 poultry by 2016 as compared to the 6,227 production in 2015.

Total volume of chicken production in the first quarter of 2016 was estimated at 3,470 MT – a decline of 2.9 percent over 2015’s level of 3,575 MT. According to PSA, this was attributed to lesser supply of day-old chicks to broiler contact growers in Ifugao. The province was the major chicken producer in the region, it stated.

Chicken egg production for the first half of the year was 1,744 MT. It was down by 5.9 percent against the January to June 2015 level of 1,853 MT. Ifugao contributed the highest production with a share of 42.1 percent, followed by Benguet with 24.7 percent share.
