La Trinidad cops reinforce border control mechanisms
by Ofelia C. Empian

La Trinidad, Benguet through the local police force will start enforcing stricter border control within the capital town following reports of relaxed restrictions in its borders.

Mayor Romeo Salda, in a letter dated Sept. 8, has asked City Mayor Benjamin Magalong to provide the municipality of a copy of the market schedules of all the city barangays.

“In our municipal Inter-Agency Task Force meeting on Sept. 4, members of the task force expressed concern over the supposed ease with which Baguio residents enter our municipality due to relaxed restrictions being imposed at our checkpoints,” Salda said.

The municipality’s major checkpoints where Baguio residents can pass through when going in and out of La Trinidad are at Km. 3 and at Longlong, Puguis borders.

“In case the city residents’ essential travel to this municipality would fall on a day which is not their scheduled market day, may we likewise request that a special pass signed by your office be required for this purpose, along with an accomplished health declaration form which will be presented at the checkpoints,” he requested.

Salda said this is also in preparation for the anticipated coming of guests and tourists once Baguio City opens its borders to tourists on Sept. 21.

The mayor added there are reports of tourists from Pangasinan and La Union visiting the municipality even when leisure travel is prohibited under the modified general community quarantine.

“Once they are able to get past the city borders, they are also able to get through our borders here that’s why we wrote the letter to the city that if they have no travel pass from Baguio City, they would not be able to come to La Trinidad,” he said.
