Kapangan culture feted in IP Month
by PIA

KAPANGAN, Benguet – Proud of their heritage, people in this municipality celebrated Indigenous Peoples Month with the theme, “Kasigudan ay Ugali, Labed di Man-ili.”

Mayor Manny Fermin said the town’s rich culture and traditions bind them as a family and society.

“In this kind of event, we show to the world that we are proud of what we are, inheriting the good indigenous practices that should be carried on from generation to generation, and inculcating our practices especially to the young generations of today,” Fermin said.

“There is a big challenge now because of modern technology. We see our youth preoccupied with gadgets like cell phones and the internet that is why I recommend most especially in the family and in schools to talk about and practice our customs and traditions,” he added.

The mayor said he is honored in displaying and wearing the native attire like the g-string on special occasions.

He   hopes to instill to the community the proper wearing of the native attire, and performing ethnic dances and rituals.

The people of Kapangan belong to two linguistic groups, the Kankanaey and the Ibaloy. Significantly, the two linguistic groups share common customs and traditions.

Fermin said their celebration of the IP Month will be now institutionalized through a municipal ordinance.

The National Indigenous People’s Month is celebrated every October as per Presidential Proclamation 1906 and series of events are held to revel the cultural wealth and heritage bestowed upon the Filipinos.

This year’s national theme is “Buhay na dunong: Pagkatuto kasama ang mga katutubo (Vital wisdoms: Learning with indigenous peoples),” which is aimed at generating issues on intangible cultural heritage under the domains of the Unesco.
