Improvements introduced at La Trinidad Municipal Jail
by Susan C. Aro / PIA

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Inmates also deserve a decent, safe, and secured place to stay.

The Bureau of Jail and Penology with the support of the local government implemented several improvements at the municipal jail to make it a secured facility and a haven for correctional improvement.

Senior Jail Officer John Melecio said among the improvements are the construction of multi-function hall which provides a space for religious, livelihood and other activities; riprapping of an eroded portion of the compound; installation of combat wires; installation of additional perimeter lights; upgrading of perimeter fence which gives more privacy; and provision of closed circuit television camera for monitoring.

They also tapped the women’s association of Pinsao Pilot Project in Baguio City to assist in pursuing income-generating projects for the inmates such as foot rug and wall décor making.

“We are also trained to care,” Melecio said, bannering the BJMP’s tagline, “Changing lives, building a safer nation.”

In line with the government’s anti-drug abuse campaign, Melecio said they have intensified cleanup of the jail to ensure that no contrabands are brought into the facility.

Drug test among inmates and jail personnel are also conducted monthly.

Information education on the effects of illegal drugs and smoking is also a monthly activity, he added.

Because it was able to comply with the standards of a jail facility, the La Trinidad Municipal Jail was certified as a drug-free and drug-cleared facility on Nov. 13, 2018 by the Cordillera Regional Oversight Committee chaired by Philippine Drug Enforcement Authority-CAR.
