Benguet declared under state of calamity to recoup losses
by PNA release

The Provincial Board of Benguet approved on Sept. 3 a resolution declaring the province under a state of calamity.

Gov. Crescencio Pacalso said the declaration is due to the road condition and not to damage on agricultural products. “If before, the travel time from Buguias to La Trinidad is only three hours, due to the road condition, it is extended from four to five hours,” Pacalso said.

He said declaration of a state of calamity will allow the province to access the remaining quick-response fund of 30 percent from the province’s P56 million calamity fund.

The province’s quick response fund for 2018 is P16M, but officials intend to leave the P4M for the last quarter of 2018.

“We can still access the P12M, which we can use to clear the slides, especially the dangerous areas, by building retaining walls,” he said.

The amount will also be used as assistance to farmers, whose plants were damaged by the continuous rains.

Pacalso said that during the rainy season, prices of vegetables normally increase, but the high prices of commodities outside Benguet is primarily controlled by traders, who buy the vegetables from the farmers and bring these to Metro Manila markets.
