Palace asked to declare Sept 13 as CAR holiday
by PNA

The Cordillera Regional Development Council (RDC) approved a resolution asking Malacañang to declare Sept.13 of every year as a non-working holiday in the region in recognition of the historical and political significance of the first peace accord or sipat entered into by the national government with the armed rebels of the Cordillera 31 years ago.

Mila Rimando, vice chair of the RDC, said Sept. 13 was the date when the late former president Corazon Aquino and the late rebel priest Conrado Balweg agreed to end the hostilities between the government and the Cordillera Bodong Administration-Cordillera Peoples Liberation Army (CBA-CPLA).

Rimando said there are three important dates in the Cordillera, including Sept. 13. First is July 15, the date Executive Order 220 creating the Cordillera was signed by the late Aquino. Another is April 24, the death of Macliing Dulag, a hero in Kalinga, who fought against the construction of the Chico River dam.

“There is no Cordillera if there was no peace agreement on Sept.13, which (prompted) President Cory to issue EO 220,” she said, stressing it was of national significance.

She added the move is now of utmost importance to the people of Cordillera, as the regional government is in full swing in doing information drives and lobbying in Congress for the passage of an organic act, which will pave the way for Cordillera to become an autonomous region.
