Game of tong–its turns bloody; policeman gets hit with a gun
by Ofelia C. Empian

A spate of unrelated incidents in Benguet happened last week as Typhoon Huaning left a trail of scattered rains and thunderstorms in Luzon.

In Pico, La Trinidad, what was supposed to be a harmless card game turned ugly when two friends had a heated argument while they were playing last Aug. 2.

The suspect, identified as Malard Sachico, 20 years old; and the victim, 25-year-old Reil Ajon Campuso, were playing the card game in their friend’s  boarding house.

Their argument led to a commotion and  their companion pacified them. When Campuso stepped out of the house, he noticed that he was bleeding. This prompted his companions to bring him to the Benguet General Hospital for medical treatment.

Responding personnel of the La Tri-nidad Municipal Police Station arrested the suspect and confiscated the evidences for proper documentation and investigation.

A case is being prepared against the suspect.

In Baguio City at 4:55 a.m. of the same day, suspect Geremy Tarapen, 25, just came out from Baguio Country Sounds along Magsaysay Avenue, when he suddenly fired upward a caliber 45 pistol four times.

Around that time, police officers 3 Joemer Altiga and Julius Liis, who were in civilian clothes, passed by the area and saw the incident.

The duo then accosted the suspect.

However, when they identified themselves as police officers, the suspect fired three more times towards Altiga but missed until his gun ran out of bullets.

Frustrated,  Tarapen threw his handgun to Altiga, injuring the policeman’s forehead.

A member of the Public Order and Safety Division who was on duty that time assisted the police officers in apprehending the suspect and immediately brought him to Baguio City Police Office Station 2 for documentation and investigation.

He will be facing a case of violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and direct assault to person in authority.
