Young miner dies in tunnel; LT resident falls off 15–feet riprap

A 14-year-old miner died of gas poisoning inside a private mining tunnel in Barangay Tuding, Itogon on Nov. 4 while he and a cousin were about to start the day’s work, a police report provided the office of Gov. Nestor Fongwan revealed.

The report identified the victim as one Jerickson E. Dalmin, a resident of Barangay Loacan, Itogon.

The investigation disclosed that the victim followed his cousin Gabriel Alos Briones to the tunnel and that upon arrival, the pair switched on the blower to ventilate the tunnel from the possible presence of poisonous gas.

While Briones was preparing to cook their food, he did not notice that the victim went ahead inside the tunnel.

It was only after a few minutes that he noticed his cousin was not around, prompting him to search for him.

He found his cousin lying flat 15 feet deep more or less inside the tunnel.

He sought assistance from neighboring miners who helped him retrieve the minor’s body and rushed him to the Baguio General Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

In La Trinidad, a 63-yearold resident of Barangay Alapang fell off a riprap in the early morning of Nov. 4 while on his way home after spending much of the night with a group of friends at a local bar in Barangay Cruz.

The victim, identified as one Rodrigo L. Dantes, fell off a 15-foot riprap near his boarding house, sustaining two lacerated wounds and abrasions on the head in the process.  

He was rushed by rescuers to the Benguet General Hospital for medical treatment. The incident was also reported to the La Trinidad municipal police station.

The capital town leads the other 12 municipalities of Benguet in the number of physical injuries or violence arising from alcohol abuse.
