Cop in La Trinidad killing sacked, 3 others suspended
by Harley F. Palangchao

CAMP DANGWA, Benguet – The policeman who shot to death a businessman and a guard in La Trinidad on Aug. 7 was dismissed from service effective Nov. 5.

Three more cops, who were also assigned to the La Trinidad Municipal Police Station, were suspended for 45 days after they were found guilty of less grave neglect of duty.

C/Supt. Isagani Nerez, Cordillera police director, signed the dismissal order for former Police Officer 2 Frenzel Mendoza, 29, including the suspension of PO2 Mafersan M. Santiago, PO3 Nemer B. Comissing, and PO3 Cid S. Acop II.

Mendoza shot to death Cezar P. Degay, 35, a businessman, and guard Sonny Awingan during an altercation with a group of youth outside Midtown Bar and Restaurant below the Benguet Capitol at Km. 6, La Trinidad, Benguet.

Another civilian, Reymar Cosendo Copis, was hit on the left hand by a stray bullet.

Prior to the incident, Mendoza was with the three suspended cops who proceeded to Midtown Bar and Restaurant night of Aug. 7.

They were the cops who responded to a shooting incident that took place in Zion Hill Gas Station, Puguis, La Trinidad early morning of Aug. 7.

Cordillera Police Information Officer C/Insp. Cheryl Fajardo-Manabat quoted Nerez as saying the actions of these police personnel are a disgrace to the organization.

“Their actions do not reflect the ideals of a true police officer but we assure the public that these rogue police personnel do not reflect the whole organization,” Nerez said.

The command also assured the public the incident is an isolated case and appealed to the public not to lose their trust to the organization, adding the police force is doing its utmost effort to keep the community secure and safe.
