A special day for mothers
Today, we celebrate a special day dedicated to the first woman in our lives, our mothers.

Motherhood is a lifetime commitment that requires constant guidance and care for family members. Our mother is our teacher, our friend, our confidant, and our conscience. Without a mother’s presence, there is no family, the basic unit of society. More importantly, she is the moral fiber that binds a family.

History claims that this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece wherein a festival commemorating Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods, was observed. This festival was held around the vernal equinox around Asia Minor and eventually in Rome itself from the Ides of March (March 15 to 18).

The Romans also had another holiday, Matronalia, that was dedicated to Juno. Mothers were usually given gifts on this day. A significant milestone concerning this special day was in 1912 when Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s Day,” and created the Mother’s Day International Association. It is said that “she was specific about the location of the apostrophe, it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honor their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world.”

A website states that “Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days throughout the world. The extent of the celebrations varies greatly. In some countries, it is potentially offensive to one’s mother not to mark Mother’s Day. In others, it is a little known festival celebrated mainly by immigrants, or covered by the media as a taste of foreign culture.”

Most women are destined to be mothers but nothing can fully prepare them for motherhood. It is a learning experience that continues for a lifetime. An achievement in itself, being a mother takes pride, joy, and an extreme amount of patience because it is not an easy task. For all the love, care, and concern that our mothers have shown us throughout our lives, isn’t it just proper for us to show them that same attention? We owe it to them for every reason of our being.

One special thing about mothers is that despite all the hardships and successes in life, they persevere and never give up. This trait is hopefully passed on to their children as a lesson of life wherein as our role models, we should follow the positive traits that they show and practice in their lives.

Taking cue from lifelong lessons, we should also learn that as they continue to be our guiding light, we must take strength from them.

We thank our mothers for molding us into the persons that we have become. To show our gratitude and love, let us make every day Mother’s Day.
