Abra irrigation system to re–operate

BANGUED, Abra – Farmers within the service areas of the Abra River Irrigation Association (ARIA) in Tayum and Bangued can now heave a sigh of relief with the expected operation of the communal irrigation system.

Farmers in the service area failed to cultivate their farms during the last cropping season because the irrigation system was not operational.  

ARIA president Gener Balubar said farmers can now start seeding in time for the re-opening of the irrigation system. He assured the irrigators that the rehabilitation of the irrigation system will be ready for the next cropping session.

The diversion canals of the ARIA in the upstream located in the upper barangays of Tayum has been damaged during the series of typhoons last year. But the repairs and maintenance of the damaged structures have been done through the funding support of the National Irrigation Administration.

Although there are portions of the lateral canals in some areas of Tayum particularly in Barangay Patucannay that are still being cemented and riprapped, Balubar had given his assurance that water will be allowed to flow to the farmlands as early as June 15. In this case, farmers will be able to harvest by October or November.
